The 2-minute guide

The quick mental math

A common shortcut: halve your hourly rate and add three zeros to estimate your yearly salary. $25 an hour is roughly $50,000 a year. It assumes a 40-hour week for about 50 weeks, so it's an estimate, not exact.

Watch the 'paid weeks' number

A standard year is 52 weeks, but if you take unpaid time off, use fewer. Two weeks unpaid means 50 paid weeks, which raises the hourly rate your salary really represents.

Over 40 hours, the premium is the whole story

Federal law requires at least time-and-a-half for every hour over 40 in a week for non-exempt workers, so a 50-hour week at $25 is not 50 × $25. It's 40 × $25 plus 10 × $37.50 — $1,375 a week, $71,500 a year, not the $65,000 a flat 50 × $25 would suggest. Set the hours above 40 and the overtime dropdown appears. The threshold is weekly: federal law sets no daily limit and requires nothing extra for a Saturday or a holiday as such, though some states (California and Alaska among them) add a daily rule of their own.

Hourly and salaried aren't equal

Salaried roles often include paid time off, benefits and sometimes bonuses that a raw hourly rate ignores. Hourly work can earn overtime, which is why comparing a salaried offer to an hourly one on the average hourly rate flatters the salary — switch to salary → hourly with your real hours and read the equivalent base rate instead. Compare the whole package, not just the converted number.

This is gross, not take-home

Taxes, Social Security, Medicare and any benefits come out before you see the money. Your take-home is meaningfully lower than these figures. Run it through the paycheck calculator to see the real number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide your yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour.

How do I convert hourly to salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by hours per week and weeks per year. $25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $52,000 a year, before taxes.

How do I work out hourly to salary with overtime?

Pay the first 40 hours of each week at your base rate and everything above it at the overtime rate, then multiply by your paid weeks. At $25 an hour and 50 hours a week with time-and-a-half, that's (40 × $25) + (10 × $37.50) = $1,375 a week, or $71,500 a year. Set hours per week above 40 above and the calculator does this for you.

Does everyone get overtime over 40 hours?

No. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires at least time-and-a-half over 40 hours a week for non-exempt employees, but workers who meet the tests for an exempt role — broadly, certain salaried executive, administrative and professional jobs — are not owed it. A job title alone doesn't decide it. If yours is exempt, choose the 1× option so the calculator doesn't add a premium you won't be paid.

How many work hours are in a year?

Full-time is usually counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. If you take unpaid time off, it's lower, which changes the hourly-to-salary math.

Is this before or after taxes?

Before. These are gross-pay conversions. Your take-home pay is lower after federal, state, Social Security and Medicare taxes come out. The paycheck calculator shows the after-tax amount.
